There are several groups in Newburyport that need to be watched carefully if you care about historic preservation and our quality of life. These groups in themselves are not dangerous but have the potential to be turned toward great destruction in Newburyport. I mention them because not everyone can be everywhere. As the fictional character Dirty Harry said, "A mans gotta know his limitations." Therefore, we have to pool our resources and monitor and take action where it counts.
These boards and committees largely consist of good people who want to do the best for our City. But good leaders need good supporters especially when they are confronted by slick consultants, engineers and lawyers. Plus, it is always worth it to keep an eye on the one or two members of the groups who have either wacky ideas, agendas of their own or are the lapdogs for vested interest. (None of these things of course could ever happen in Newburyport. Naught!)
The Planning Board
The Conservation Commission
The Zoning Board of Appeals
The Energy Advisory Committee
The Council on Disabilities
Newburyport Redevelopment Authority
The Water and Sewer Committees
There are from time to time other boards or individuals to monitor when the need arises but most of them tend to be harmless, much like the Senior Center Building Committee somewhere near the edge of the Sinai still looking for that promised land!
