Sorry for the last minute notice but a major upgrade to the Newburyport Tree Ordinances is being submitted tonight. It will probably be sent to committee but someone needs to speak at the public comment in support of this measure.
There are certain distinctive elements that make Newburyport such a magnificent city: the brick sidewalks, the lampposts, the historic buildings and our street trees. Yet, many are in poor condition or, because of an inappropriate species, have torn up the sidewalks; it is important that serious, enforceable ordinances be passed. We need the right type of trees and we need to care for the trees we have.
As a matter of note, the DPW has been doing a bang-up job grinding down the trunks of those unfortunate diseased trees or removing the stumps that have had to come down.
The appearance of old stumps is a blight on our community and removing them opens up the potential of having good trees and straight, safe sidewalks.
Again, it is nice to see!
