Your thought processes have to be pretty screwed up if you actually think that saying ‘No’ to these three questions in the ballot box is somehow benefiting us as citizens and our City.
Question One in November repeals the sales tax on Alcoholic Beverages. Now, I don’t drink much but I’m not thinking of liquid pleasures when I see the confiscatory nature of this tax increase. It hasn’t gone to the level of bootlegging but it is a no brainer that shoppers are going to head across the border. This terrible tax increase, that Mike Costello voted for, has bull’s eyes painted on our local liquor establishments. What is worse, we are so close to the border that it does us GREAT harm.
Question Two has to do with repealing the 40B law. If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will see in my arguments that getting rid of this hideous beast will so benefit our state not just in relieving pressure on our communities but will return sanity to municipal planning, and infrastructure and will do much to take the pressure off our watersheds and sewer plants not even mentioning a host of other good things. Whenever a developer wants to trample down Newburyport’s open space, traditions, zoning and local laws, they raise the 40B banner. Kill this stinker.
Question Three is a no brainer when it comes to restoring our competitiveness against New Hampshire. Thank heavens, the puritans defied the king and mandated the border with New Hampshire to be further north of the Merrimack River. Can you imagine the devastation in Newburyport if the Gillis Bridge crossed into our northern neighbor? If you live in a border community, a Yes is a no brainer even for a Keynesian Economist. It would also make it less onerous to shop south of the Live Free or Die State.
So, when you go to the ballot box on November 2nd, go beyond the candidates and realize that some pretty important votes are before you. Read up, be ready to put down the correct answer (i.e. You meant to put down the right answer but became confused and darkened the wrong box!) and for heaven’s sake, regardless if you agree or disagree with me, VOTE!
