Newburyport’s Art Colony

I am just not an artsy person.      And yet, one of the great things about Newburyport is its local artist community.

Further south of us, Rockport was famous for having a significant artists colony back in the early to mid-twentieth century.     It possessed a rich history and a significant portfolio of influential and talented people.

I know this, because it’s in their tourist brochures.     They talk about their artists like they’re historical figures.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but art isn’t some historical artifact in Newburyport.    Our city is packed with talented, creative artists who are absolutely Avant-garde and are living and breathing and producing a rich cultural environment.     

I think that art colony moved north! 

I’ve been asked to announce an Open Studio for one of our artists.     I may not understand them but anything to promote our local artists will be done enthusiastically.    In fact, I am honored.

EXPLORE THE WORLD OF COLLAGE!

Ann’s assemblages and collages combine vibrant color and varied textures to explore ancient cultures, the arts, family and nature. Adult classes in collage, looking at its history, contemporary examples and providing hands on experience with found materials.

The Artist

Ann McCrea’s work has been displayed at galleries in New England, including the McCoy Gallery, the Robert Lehman Art Center, The Center for the Arts at the Newburyport Firehouse, the Newburyport Art Association, Maudslay State Park and the Carl Youngman Gallery. She hosts annual open studios and sales in her Newburyport Massachusetts studio.
