The Big Historic Question

Debates have raged for literally a thousand years plus as to why the Roman Empire fell.     I mean, this was no mean government.    It covered tens of thousands of square mile and ruled over most of the known civilized world. (at least from a Western viewpoint)   It stretched from its beginnings long before Christ’s birth and the empire, at least via its Byzantine version existed into the 14th century.       Some say that its lingering essence runs through the world’s veins even today.

So what wiped ‘em out?     The importance of that question has extreme relevance.    We need to know what caused its destruction so it won’t happen again to our own modern civilization!

So, too…Newburyport.     What caused a shiny city upon a hill (at least The Ridge) to so be shattered that the downtown was a collection of shuttered storefronts and the average homeowner was so poor they couldn’t even provide a slap of paint?

What were the causes?        Who do you think was responsible?       Could it have been prevented?     If so, what steps need to be taken to prevent this ever happening again?

This giant question mark has loomed over our city even today.      No one wants to rankle the community with finger pointing and produce raised, angry voices of denial.     No one wants to be singled out for History’s glaring light to label, ‘this was the bad thing done.”, “This was the human face of a ‘destroyer”.

But one day, it has to be answered.     What caused Newburyport to plunge into the pits of economic and some-say social ruin?

Anyone brave enough to speak up?*
