It is going to happen – the Newburyport Historic District is ripe for producing either a class-action lawsuit or an ADA-inspired civil rights lawsuit.
That is how bad the sidewalks are – and they are at crisis level in the South End.
The only thing that has prevented this from happening is having someone with money to do it.
But it’s coming. Some high-brow is going to be lured by our cooing real estate agents about how ‘walkable’ our City is and how convenient we are with all the lovely shops and coffee houses. With money just dripping from his or her pockets, they are going to move in and then try to get downtown by foot.
After the first spill, (or two); they are going to get angry enough to gather several of their other high-brow friends who were persuaded into moving into Newburyport and persuade them to jump in as fellow claimants.
Remember, the American Disabilities Act is not law, it is a civil right like free speech and freedom of religion. If the City gets entangled, it’s not going to be pleasant and it’s going to cost us if Highbrow and buddies win.
We need to press for proper sidewalks.
It is only a matter of time.
THE CLOCK IS TICKING.
