Tonight’s Meeting

Well, we’ve had a great weekend but now it’s time to get back to the job at hand!

What’s the job?    

Keeping a watchful eye out for the well-being of this City.

There’s been some talk about ‘Troublemakers’ that have helped the City.      Yes, sometimes you have to speak loudly, some times you have to shout but thankfully it isn’t always necessary.

While we may carry around a big chip on our shoulder, we can also forget there are businesses, government agencies, non-profits and organizations that are trying to do the right thing.    Many are even reaching out for proper guidance.

Not every one out there is arrogant and selfish.

There are those out there who will listen.

A good example is found in tonight’s Planning Board meeting.      The new owner of the property at the end of Russell Terrace Extension wants to modify the present open space residential development plan or OSRD.     Their job tonight is to justify that request with an engineering plan and a mitigation procedure.     The Developer has a history of listening and working out plans for the sake of the environment.     They want to do the right thing but they also are going in with some pre-conceived ideas due to the bad economy.*

It is up to the public attending and the presiding members of the Planning Board to decide if the request is justified.

Lot 10 View from LRNT Now personally, after seeing this site near the Little River Bike Path, I would love to have nothing going in there and let nature take it’s course.   There is always with all the cancelled projects around us for that to possibly happen.    But then a large swath of wetlands would be in limbo that reaches all the way to the abandoned Crow Lane.    

IF A COMPROMISE CAN BE REACHED, the development will go forward, a thick buffer will be placed between the houses and the Path and 37.5 acres of crucial wetlands will have a conservation restriction administered and enforced by Essex County Greenbelt.   They will also be upgrading the water/sewer system in that area west of Low Street at no additional cost to the City.

As you can see, there is a lot at stake!!!!!!!!!

The Planning Board will be meeting tonight at 7:00 in the City Council Chambers.     It is best to be informed so please read the front page of the Planning Board website.     It has the entire OSRD with proposals for the public to review.

The Planning Office needs you there to add your testimony.

The City needs you there to protect Newburyport.

EMOTIONAL BLATHERING WON’T HELP AND ENTHUSIASTIC BUT EMPTY EXHORTATIONS WON’T HELP THE PLANNING BOARD MAKE THEIR DECISION – SO PLEASE READ UP AND GO IN WITH A COPY IN HAND IF YOU SUFFER LIKE I DO WITH BRAIN LEAKAGE!

* It has just been reported that real estate property in Newburyport has accrued 17% in the last year alone while surrounding towns and regions are having their values depreciate.     Developers are scared to death about the economy and they see us as a light upon a hill.      That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on their mindset.
