I checked my sources as to where these gangs were coming from in Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell and Lynn.
From what I have gathered, these are homegrown gang members who have decided to mix it up with outside gang members.
So, it is very much disturbing when we find the problem makers are actually nearby or amongst us.
We often fight here in Newburyport over ‘little things’ that seem to occupy our busy lives. We also take for granted so much of this area that it takes these incidents to remind us that it is not so nice in other communities. Which is why it drives me crazy when there is a select and powerful minority that wish we were like ‘other’ cities.
It drives me crazy especially when I drive through Lynn and see entire city blocks along with office buildings fenced off and street after street of worn-down housing. Standing on a curb in Lowell and hearing the perpetual sirens of police and ambulances after yet another urban disturbance. Seeing the depressed faces in these inner cities should be enough to snap anyone out of being envious!
Of course, a quick trip to Fowles or Richdale for a Haverhill, Lawrence or Salem paper can do the same (and saves gas getting there!) Sit back perhaps at the Todd Room in the Library and read about burglaries, domestic violence, home invasions, murders, stabbings, etc.
Unfortunately, it is extra alarming when we find the not-so-nice outside world seeping into Newburyport!
