$500,000 is a lot of money. The Save the Lower Green effort has been tremendously successful and is getting very close to the goal of purchasing four acres behind the historic common. $390,000 has been raised so far.
Why should we in Newburyport care? We are inexorably connected with Newbury – where the founding of the Newbury Plantation occurred so long ago. But in a modern way, we are also closely connected by the Essex Heritage Coastal Scenic Byway. Our visitors will expect to see our beautiful vistas. We need to see our region preserved for our mutual benefit.
If you ever get a chance to go to New Jersey, there are two communities that stick in my memory of what happens when we allow over-development to encroach upon our quality of life. One is Princeton and the other is Ocean Grove. These places of paradise are surrounded up to the edge of their borders with urban sprawl. And both are horribly impacted by the close proximity.
If we allow our surrounding communities to sink into over-development and poor town management, in the end; the horrible problems resulting will start to pour into our City. This summer with stabbings, hatchet attacks and gang fights; we can see why it is important to protect Newburyport from the negative influences of other communities. If the other cities and towns go downhill, Newburyport will soon follow.
The Save the Lower Green is important for that measure.
Now much of the fundraising is done. And much of the hype is over and yet the effort still needs $110,000. Those with deep pockets have done their part – it is time for the rest of us to ensure this historic asset is protected.
“But we (I’m included on this) are broke!” you may say.
Now is the time to send whatever you have. Little as in $5, $10, $15, $20 or more will make a huge difference if all of us chip in together. It lessons our sacrifice and will achieve a long lasting result.
“But I have other groups I support!” you may say. As Jesus says, “The poor you have always”. Some needs are ever present but chipping in before the deadline of September 30th, will have a one-shot solution.
LET’S EVERYONE CHIP IN A LITTLE!
