But I assure you, it is just the beginning. Once this landfill is completed, the property will be handed over to the City and with a bond in place, New Ventures will be walking away.
We’ll be stuck with a huge impervious surface looming over the Common Pasture and contributing to our periodic floods.
We’ll be stuck with the Little River receiving drainage from suspect areas around the landfill.
We’ll be stuck with the berm holding up a huge amount of fill. If the berm lets go down the pike will New Ventures come and fix it? I strongly doubt it.
As for gas emissions from this landfill – who will control the system and more importantly, maintain it? Someone in Newburyport? In a city renown for keeping things properly maintained. (Sarcasm)
Unfortunately, for many years – we will be getting periodic ‘surprises’ that we as a city will have to resolve.
AND SO IT BEGINS!
