The Clueless

“Not to know is bad, not to wish to know is worse.”

I don’t know what has come over Newburyport.       Politics is actually a very exciting thing especially when sharp intellectual minds do battle over issues regardless if it comes from the left or right.

But that is not what we are getting now in discussions around town.

We have people breaking out in perspiration and being ‘afraid’ as if some unseen force that can not be detected or sensed is looming over their lives.       We have people more willing to heed empty slogans and shouted epithets rather than taking the time to think things through.       And of course, we have people, like stubborn mules*, digging in their hooves – too unwilling to even deal with challenges and issues concerning the City.

My greatest fear is seeing the citizens of Newburyport staring at the great future before us, turning tail and running away into obscurity.

As Plato noted so long ago, “One of the penalties of not participating in politics is that you will be governed by your inferiors.”

I think what we have here in town is a case of taking for granted the great situation we find ourselves.      But good things will come to an end if we are not diligent.       There are always threats to our quality of life and if we don’t bother to get involved in our local politics, a tiny, corrupt group of exploiters will take the advantage.         All we need is to point to surrounding local communities who have fallen into this trap of apathy.

REGARDLESS OF YOUR POSITION, GET INVOLVED, GET TO THE POLLS AND JOIN IN THE DISCUSSION OF ISSUES IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.
