Who is the Chamber working for?

Now supposedly the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce is working for the collective businesses in not just the City but in the surrounding areas which includes the Lord Timothy Dexter Industrial Park.    Now to show its fealty with the Downtown retail businesses, the headquarters are located next to the Waterfront Trust’s Riverside Park.

The Downtown’s lifeblood is based on a large number of visitors every day coming into Newburyport.      It would stand to reason the Chamber would do anything possible to get more visitors to the City.     The math is simple – you can not have a prosperous commercial district living off of 18,000 Newburyporters and a regional population of just about 50,000.       But just outside this immediate area is 300,000,000 Americans.    Outside of that are 35,000,000 Canadians and outside of that is 7 billion of the rest of the planet.      Just a tiny percentage would pack our downtown.

Every year, they design and produce a beautiful and extremely useful tourist booklet that aught to win awards it’s so grand.      They organize wonderful festivals to draw visitors to the City.

I’ll tell you why.       New England Development doesn’t want it to happen.

Steve Karp knows about The Curse.     He knows that Newburyport as great as it is consistently fails the Kansas Phenomena.        He also knows from talking with celebrities that visit here that we have a custom of lacking deference toward big names on the world scene.     If Steve Jobs had been still alive and was walking on Pleasant Street; he’d have to elbow some tourist so he could get his $.25 hotdog at Richdales.      It’s just the way we are!

He wants to attract the very famous and the very wealthy to a City where they can feel comfortable, let their hair down knowing the Paparazzi couldn’t find Newburyport on the map let alone be here and he wants to be the one who guarantees that anonymity while providing world-class accommodations from marinas to shops to restaurants.        It’s too late for Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Charleston & Savannah.       All these places are awash with common-folk tourists.       And yes, at risk of sounding like a snob; we’ve all been to Boston and seen tourists as they trip over the redline of the Liberty Trail.      You don’t have to go overseas to see an Ugly American*!     Now imagine the celebrities mixing it up with these tourists if Newburyport is ever ‘discovered’.

Consequently, you won’t find the name Newburyport in any travel magazines.     There will rarely be any highlighted articles concerning it’s features.       You won’t see any effort to get it talked about on major shows in print, on the radio nor on television.

So here is the question again, “Who is the Chamber working for?

* Not necessarily a reference to their looks but their attitude – ‘ugly American’ is in reference to the 1958 book’s description, The Ugly American. By William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick.    Here is a summary of the book that prophesied the debacle of American foreign diplomacy during the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s.
