Sorry, you can’t come!      That is, you can’t come unless you get a current member of the Custom House to invite you as a guest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every month on the first Friday, the museum (which is closed right now) is opened up, free to members and their quests and some excellent presentations punctuate a great night of conversation, Harpoon beer, soft drinks and wine and interesting food from around the world.

This is Greater Newburyport’s closest thing to the National Geographic Society and New York’s famous Adventurers Club.

Family Matriarch Mary Hudson Marquand

20th Century Pulitzer Prize Author John P. Marquand

The program presentation this month shines a beacon upon the often overlooked maritime connection within the museum’s stately Marquand Library, where celebrated Newburyport author John P. Marquand’s legacy is firmly anchored to his legendary 18th century maritime ancestors: Captain Daniel Marquand and wife, Mary Hudson Marquand.

We welcome distinguished Newburyport Superior Court Judge, the Honorable Richard E. Welch, III, grandson to author John P. Marquand, as our program guest to discuss the Marquand family lineage. A thoroughly engaging speaker, Justice Welch will share his thoughts and insights of this venerable two-century-old Newburyport legacy, and entertain questions following. It’s an event you shouldn’t miss — so please don’t be late — as our presentation this month begins at 6:30pm.

For your refreshment, wine, beer and soft drinks will be served — along with specially prepared hors d’oeuvres created by the amazing Sheila Mullins. This month, Sheila’s Spice Trade Culinary Adventure draws its inspiration from the ancient Aegean coastal city of Smyrna, Turkey.
